I set my phone down and grinned at Callie across the way. Bright and early Tuesday morning, no human should have smiled as large as mine beamed. âThat was the condo complex. I can move in this weekend!â
Callie threw her arms up in the air. âThatâs awesome. You totally lucked out.â
Surprisingly, and much to my delight. While the condo I loved was out of my desired price range, it was still feasible. That it was empty, all the better. A weekâs extra rent was worth the price to pay to be able to finally get out of the hotel room and be able to finally make a place a home. Which meant I had a lot of work to do.
âOh my gosh. Iâll need to go shopping.â I hadnât even considered. âThereâs an IKEA here, right? Because I need everything, down to silverware organizers. The works.â
Callie threw her head back and laughed. âOf course there is. But you better look into renting a moving truck or something if you head there. Sounds like youâre going to need it.â
âOn it. And thanks. My mom was happy, but I know my family is still nervous Iâm here, so thanks for being excited with me.â
âHappy employees are better employees,â she teased me with a wink. After a few short weeks of working with Callie, I learned she was rarely serious outside of job duties. âYou should tell your dad.â
âUgh. Thanks for bursting my happy balloon.â I poked my tongue out at her.
âSorry.â
âItâs nothing. I suppose I should tell him, though. At least so they know the hotel room will be opening up.â
With the trade deadline less than two months away and the whispers Iâd heard about potential trades in the works, heâd need it.
âRight.â She rolled her eyes. âBecause Vik would only care about the room being available. Not your welfare.â
I shot her a doubtful look that said it all.
In an uncharacteristic moment of seriousness, Callie tilted her head to one side. âI know you two barely have a relationship, but have you considered the fact heâs trying? And that he cares even if heâs been shitty at showing it? He did offer to go look at apartments with you, didnât he?â
âIâm trying not to get my hopes up.â
âUnderstandable. But opening the door an inch wide wouldnât hurt too much, would it?â
She was right. I knew she was. I also knew Vik was trying. He didnât have to try to have lunch with me. He didnât have to pay for my dinner the other night. And he didnât have to offer to help me find a place. He was doing all the right little things to show his effort.
None of it negated the last twenty-three years of my life, but at some point, didnât I have to accept his attempts to heal the breach as true desire to want to get to know me if we had any chance?
âIâll go talk to him.â
âThatta girl. Now shooâ¦.â She opened her office door and waved me out like an annoying fly.
